If you look around, you will see many people promising you huge amounts of money for webcam chatting. They will tell you you can easily make up to ### dollars per month. But what can you really expect? And what happens to your income if you join a studio instead of being independent? Earnings claims are outrageous. Some sites will be “modest” and say you can make up to $7,000 or $10,000 per month. Others talk about more than $20,000 per month. Lately we encountered a site who said you can make up to $50,000 per month. Is that true? No. Not entirely.

For instance the $50,000 claim.
If you do a private show on that site, they will pay out $3 /minute, or $180 per hour. To make $50,000 only doing private shows you will have to be in private for (50,000 / 180) = 277 hours and 46 minutes.
If you work 8 hours, 5 days per week you make 168 hours per month. So to make $50,000 you have to be in private shows 165% of the time. That is 65% more than you actually have.
In reality the time an average cam girl spends in private on most chatsites is close to 3%.
If in an actual 2 weeks pay period they once paid $25,000 to a performer, that money was probably not made by just collecting tokens on cam in that period.

So the claims are likely to be shamelessly exagerated. “Up to” means of course that maybe 1 person did actually make that once, but all the others did not. At best only a few top performers on a site will actually make half that money 1 or 2 times in a 2 week payment period. More likely the money was collected as aggregate earnings of a whole studio, or saved up over a longer period. Or the tokens were transferred for different reasons that do not have to do with webcam chatting.

How much is it really?

Many more successful cam performers have claimed they have an overall income of $3,000 to $6,000 per month. We think it is fair to state that you can make that for maybe 2 or 3 months, if you are successful and have good discipline. Many performers will make much less though. The minimum earnings are $0. There is not a single guarantee that you will make money when you go on a webcam chatsite. If you are in a studio you may even end up wih a debt. How can that be?

Theoretical examples

Let us look into what happens if you generate a payout on chatsites of $300, $2,000 and $6,000 per month. Let us compare the situation where you work independently to a situation where you are in a studio. A typical contract we observed some studios actually impose, states that you get 40% of the earnings. Before that they take a daily target of $20. That is $420 for 21 days. If you do not make the target the remaining money will be charged to you. If you walk away you will have a debt of $400 for “costs”. So the minimum earning you can have is -/-$420 (minus $420) for 21 days not generating any earnings.

Case 1: payout is $300 / month

Receiver

independent:

in studio :

the studio takes:

Amount

$300

-/-$120

$420

Calculation

= $300 - $0

= $300 - $420

Case 2: payout is $2,000 / month

Receiver

independent:

in studio :

the studio takes:

Amount

$2,000

$ 632

$1,368

Calculation

= $2,000 - $0

= (2,000 - $420) x 40%

= $2,000 - $632

Case 3: payout is $6,000 / month

Receiver

independent:

in studio :

the studio takes:

Amount

$6,000

$2,232

$3,768

Calculation

= $6,000 - $0

= (6,000 - $420) x 40%

= $6,000 - $2,232

In a studio, either way you do not earn much or even end up with a debt, or you earn something and the studio takes an outrageous cut of it. In any case you will be much better off working from home. Even if you have poor discipline or limited opportunity and privacy at home.

As you see the studio will not take any risk when they recruit you. Instead they will always earn at least $420 / month on you, even if you don't make any money. Therefore they are likely to accept anybody who is stupid enough to sign for it.

Working in a cam studio is not a glamorous job.

Some practical examples

A practical case of a Romanian studio girl who talked about her earnings on a forum showed a much more negative image. She told she once made 5,000 tokens ($250 payout) in a single day on Chaturbate. She also told she is on 10 websites simultaneously. A quick estimate suggests she should be generating a payout of about $3,500 per month. She told she got 50% of the earnings.
Yet, when asked about her actual income she said she made $1,000 in her best month. Obviously 50% of $3,500 = $1,750. So where did the $750 go?

Another girl claimed she got 50% of earnings, but when she mentioned numbers, it turned out to be $0.02 for every $0.05 token, which is only 40%.

A new independent girl working from home started doing it to pay her rent of $750. She enthousiastically stated she got half way in only 3 days. She made $125 per day in only a few hours online. Three hours later she recalculated and had her entire rent for the month covered. In other words, she made $125 per hour in that period. Earnings will be irregular and insecure. There will be slow days and there may be good days.

On a site, reported to be very lucrative for performers were at some moment 850 active female performers, 34 of them were in a private or group show. That means on average all female performers were in private or group 4% of their time. That is 144 seconds or 2:24 minutes per hour. If we assume they made an average of $3 per minute, the average income of all female performers at that moment would have been $7.20 per hour, + some amount that was tipped in public chat. We estimate that the average income would be about $10 – $12.50 per hour, or $1,680 - $2,100 per month on that site. A number of performers would be on other sites at the same time, increasing the average. But most other sites yield less income to the performers, so the average earnings of a cam performer may not be far away from $2,000 per full time month. That would mean that against 1 performer making $50,000, there would be 24 performers making $0 or close to $0. If we assume somebody who makes $0 will not stay longer than maybe 3 days, 1 performer making $50,000 would be offset by 7 x 24 = 168 tragic failures.
This is just a snapshot view. The average income may differ on other moments.

Who is your business partner?

Most large webcam chatsites have good track records of payment. They have automated payout systems that make you receive every payment accurately and on time. If anything goes wrong it will be corrected within days or with the next payment.

Cam studios however can be run by anyone. Some may be bonafide business people or dedicated startup (ex-)performers, but some may be unreliable good-for-nothings or even professional criminals.
